A Kindle In Real Life – New York Secret Bookstore

Posted in architecture, Media by aldorf on October 17, 2011

How much digital space would it take..?

Michael Seidenberg, a used book dealer who has been selling books since the ’70s, recently converted his 84th Street apartment into a kind of salon for collectors. Accessible by appointment, Michael entertains anyone armed with a wine bottle. The Brazen Head (named after a John Cowper Powys work) has had several incarnations over the last 30 years: sharing a performance space near the Gowanus with a puppet company, in a storefront on 84th Street between Lexington and 3rd (now replaced by a laundromat), and along the sidewalks of Manhattan on folding tables.

After yesterdays news about another medical leave of him, I remembered his commencement address atStanford from 2005.

Restaurant Service Robot – Recognizing Users’ Intention

Posted in ideas by aldorf on September 22, 2010

In the near future, the service robots will come into human society such as home, office, and restaurant. In order to make the service robots sociable for better service, the robots should have to interact with humans. We aim to develop emotionally interactive service robot in the restaurant service area using emotional human-robot interaction technologies which have been researched in our group. This movie clip shows our emotionally interactive restaurant service robot scenario.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

The practical interactive service robot have to integrate many robot technologies. We are focusing on these research objectives below, and integrate the technologies to implement the practical restaurant service robot system.

  1. Mobile robot platform with robust stability and high mobility in the service area.
  2. Path recognition and planning via points in the service area
  3. Restaurant service integrated software system from registering guests to controlling robot
  4. Restaurant service by robot such as menu ordering and beverage service
  5. Human recognition, tracking, and human’s intention recognition for situation assessment

80*81 Art/Magazine Project

If history repeats itself, if history is cyclical we might just be on the other side of the cycle. Somewhere in between January 1980 and December 1981 something was beginning which has just ended now, 30 years later, or is starting to repeat itself. We zoomed out from New Year’s Eve to a two-year overview then to zoom in again, month by month.
The film set in the Grande Hotel was now called Mozartbique (2011, CR and Franz Stauffenberg) and has a lot of masks in it. Not African ones. But Star Warsand Fantômas, Frankenstein and Bunny. Our idea is to develop the idea of the opera. We asked René Pollesch if he would help us with performative evenings in different theatre houses, to compile a dramaturgic progress from a ‘congress en miniature’ into a play or an opera with a beginning a middle and an end. Like almost everyone we talked to, Mr.Pollesch liked the idea.

In a way we will try to put things back together. Have one story line, one plot and one ending. One or two Grand Narratives, one or two Plateaux. The opera will be performed in Munich on New Year’s Eve 2010.
