Best Design – Mode Folding Bicycle

Posted in design by aldorf on July 5, 2010

Winner of an iF Gold Award. Designed for Pacific Cycles by Mark Sanders. The man behind the Strida Bike. Now folding bikes really become an option. The bike has a special handle so you can wheel it around much like airport luggage. With its green credentials and compact shape, Sanders says, the features and “uncluttered aesthetic offer a radical new image of what a bicycle can be.”

Boy, 7, raises $220,000 for Haiti

Posted in blog, ideas by aldorf on January 26, 2010

Incredible story.

“My name is Charlie Simpson. I want to do a sponsored bike ride for Haiti because there was a big earthquake and loads of people have lost their lives,” said Simpson on his JustGiving page, a fundraising site which launched his efforts.

Simpson from Fulham, West London had hoped to raise just £500 for UNICEF’s earthquake appeal by cycling eight kilometers (five miles) around a local park.

You can still donate to Charlie’s fundraising page.

Superb Idea: Bike Lane That Travels With You

Posted in ideas by aldorf on January 23, 2010

At least a solution for riding at night and short winter days. Enter LightLane, a safety concept from the clever designers at Altitude, Inc. The system projects a virtual bike lane (using lasers!) on the ground around the cyclists, providing drivers with a recognizable boundary they can easily avoid. While ridership is increasing every year, bicycle safety remains a huge issue: in 2007, 43,000 people were injured in bike accidents, resulting in 698 deaths. (via GOOD)

Favorite Viral 2009: Danny MacAskill

Posted in web by aldorf on December 30, 2009

Filmed over the period of a few months in and around Edinburgh by Dave Sowerby, this video of Inspired Bicycles team rider Danny MacAskill (more info at features probably the best collection of street/street trials riding ever seen. There’s some huge riding, but also some of the most technically difficult and imaginative lines you will ever see. Without a doubt, this video pushes the envelope of what is perceived as possible on a trials bike.
Credit to Band of Horses for their epic song ‘The Funeral.’

More Danny bike trials here.
